With a Song and a Spirit of Philanthropy in their Hearts

With a Song and a Spirit of Philanthropy in their Hearts

Rebecca (Becky) Brown-McCusker '85/M'88 and her husband, Dr. Paul McCusker, have been avid fans and supporters of Becky's alma mater, Frostburg State University, through their volunteer efforts and financial support. Both are currently retired -- Becky from her position as manager of Frostburg Heights Apartments -Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries and Paul from his position as a clinical psychologist with the Veterans Administration. We asked the McCuskers to share their story and why philanthropy and supporting FSU has been a personal priority for both of them.

FROSTBURG STATE UNIVERSITY: Becky, Paul - thank you for your support of FSU. What has kept you close to the University over the years (while some alums often drift away) ?

McCUSKERS:Becky became active with the FSU Alumni Association and then served a term on the FSU Foundation. After serving on the Foundation, she became active on the Advisory Council of WFWM and is currently the secretary. She had a great experience while she was a student and wanted to continue her connection with FSU.

FSU: How did you select which University program to support and why?

M: WFWM, public radio from FSU, serves not only the University but also the community with its diverse programming. It offers programming that is not offered on any other local radio station which is good for the community. We want to see this station continue to do what it does and that is to offer the wide range of programs from classical to jazz to old time country music and everything in between. Both of us are music lovers and we want to support WFWM as much as possible. Favorite shows include "With Heart and Voice" and "Sunday Baroque," as well as "Evening Jazz" and "Jukebox Friday Night." We also like "Mountain Maryland Barn Dance" and "Turn Back the Dial." WFWM's strong support of live music events on and off campus is also very important to us.

FSU: What would you say to other alumni who are thinking about supporting the University and have not yet?

M: We would tell them that no amount of financial support is too small and to think about what they gained while a student at FSU. FSU is more than just a group of buildings. It is where learning for life takes place and friendships are made. Supporting FSU shows that one wants to give back to the institution that showed them the way.

FSU: What is your hope for the future of the University and its students?

M: We hope that the University stays strong and has offerings that are consistent with the needs of the students as their needs change with the times. Another thing is that the University stays connected with the community of Frostburg. After all, it was members of the community who built the University.
